Project 2020 vs 2021 Research Report
Overview
In 2020, I worked to complete the 📊 2020 vs 2021 Benchmark Project, a collaborative effort involving project managers, marketing professionals, engineers, and designers. The initiative aimed to conduct annual benchmark testing of TalkingPoint's cross-platform service. My responsibilities included leading and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative components of an inclusive design research project, culminating in the creation of a comprehensive reference report for stakeholders.
Research Focus 🎯
The primary research question guiding our efforts was to assess the performance of the 2021 version of the service compared to its 2020 counterpart.
Methodology 📈
To address this question, I meticulously grouped data into key findings, acknowledging and accounting for variations in sample sizes. Noteworthy here is the contextual impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 dataset, specifically question 18, which garnered approximately 300 responses. In contrast, the Spring 2021 product data for question 5 amounted to around 70 responses. The qualitative data from both years was systematically sorted into key themes, allowing for a nuanced understanding of user experiences. Proportions were calculated and compared to derive meaningful insights.
Key Findings 🔍
Despite variations in sample sizes, the overall analysis revealed notable trends. Specifically, improvements in the understandability of read receipts were identified, while issues related to notification bugs exhibited a decrease in performance.
Challenges and Solutions 🛠️
Acknowledging the potential for skewed data due to uneven sample sizes and its implications for Type I Error, I implemented a solution-centric approach. To minimize the impact of uneven sample sizes, I adopted a cautious calculation methodology, ensuring a more accurate interpretation of the findings.
This comprehensive approach to research design, analysis, and reporting delivered valuable insights to stakeholders.
Landing Page Optimization for Enhanced User Experience
Challenge 🌟
The project posed a dual challenge of a text-heavy interface and unintuitive UX across both web and mobile platforms. Additionally, the context was primarily U.S.-focused, posing a mismatch for an emerging population.
Approach 🚀
Recognizing the need for a rapid yet impactful solution, I undertook a thorough competitive analysis to identify industry best practices for redesigning the login page. This analysis informed a strategic direction for the subsequent design overhaul.
Implementation 🛠️
Collaborating closely with the lead designer, we conducted user research to validate design choices that would resonate with the target audience. The key insight was the incorporation of icons and concise bullet points, resulting in a remarkable 33.4% increase in usability.
Results 📈
The revamped landing page not only addressed the identified pain points, but also significantly improved overall usability, providing a more intuitive and engaging experience for users. This project showcases my commitment to delivering strategic UX solutions that align with business objectives.

Heuristic Insights: A Critical Analysis of Mobile App User Experiences
Mobile App Content Audits and User Experience Enhancements
Context 📱
As part of the user experience team at Talking Points, I conducted a comprehensive content audit of three mobile apps: the Parents' app, the Translation app, and the Teacher app. The objective was to establish a foundation for further research aimed at optimizing the overall user experience.
Key Activities 📋
-
Content Audits: Conducted in-depth evaluations of content across the three mobile apps to assess strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities for improvement.
-
Flows and Evaluations: Meticulously evaluated user flows within the apps to pinpoint pain points and areas requiring refinement.
Focus Areas 🎯
During this evaluation, a particular focus was on the Teacher app, where a unique flaw was identified. Initially, "Chat Support" and "Need Help" were presented as separate categories, potentially causing confusion for users seeking assistance.
Identified Flaw 🚨
Resolution: Following a detailed analysis, a strategic decision was made to enhance the user experience by consolidating "Chat Support" and "Need Help" into a unified "Help and Support" section. This adjustment aimed to streamline the user journey, providing a more intuitive and cohesive experience for teachers using the app.
Outcome 🌟
The consolidation of the help and support section resulted in a smoother user experience for teachers, effectively addressing the identified flaw and aligning with the goal of enhancing usability across TalkingPoints' mobile apps.
